| Here is a sneak peak at some fascinating history about the Old Cavern Dragway from the famous Grady Bryant. More glimpses into the past will be coming soon!
Excerpt #1 from "Match Race Madness" Legends of Carlsbad Racing Not many people realize it, but this area is rich in racing history. Johnny Gray, Dickie Harrell, Gene Snow, Grady Bryant, Don Garlits, all raced nearby. These names might not mean anything to the younger generation, but I can see you old guys nodding your heads. We’re gathering stories and photos to post here so this history doesn’t get lost. If anybody has a favorite story or photo to contribute, please contact us. Photos will be returned unharmed. Speaking of legends and car clubs, 30-40 years ago if you didn’t have a Dirt Dobber’s jacket, you were nobody. The Dirt Dobbers Car Club of Carlsbad had an invitation only membership of the hottest cars in the area. Some of those guys and their cars are still around. Johnny Mendez is working his little butt off rounding these guys up to hold a reunion at the Old Cavern Dragway. What a treat that will be. We’ll keep you posted as that shapes up.
